as i said, i recently saw the four hour tom petty documentary. i love tom petty but am not sure about his advancement/possibilities for advancement. on the one hand, he has always been an advocate of rocking, rocking out, and being a rocker. on the other hand, examining his career, i don't know where he would have advanced. in the movie, they make a big deal of "don't come around here no more" which, if heard in the context of four hours of tom petty, does sound pretty damn radical (and it was part of a loose concept album, southern accents, which i guess you could maybe think of as tom petty's "berlin") but it didn't really signal any kind of sea change in his work, it was more anomalous. one of the reasons i think his greatest hits collections can sell so well is, even with slight differences in production, his songs from the late seventies don't sound too awfully different from songs a decade older.

either way, a super bowl greatest hits medley with incongruous guest artists and expensive sets and staging can only be a step in the right direction

Your grasp of the theory is astounding.
